Dr. Walters is Lead Research Data Scientist in the Defence AI Research Centre (DARe) at The Alan Turing Institute, leading and supervising research in the Edge AI and Synthetic Data themes. He focuses on the application and development of cutting-edge data science and deep-learning techniques to solve real-world high-impact problems, and he has research interests in detection, classification, optimisation and modelling problems, deployment and development of AI methods for hardware-constrained environments, and distributed and autonomous systems. Dr. Walters’ research background is in remote sensing and geophysics, focussing on satellite and airborne systems. Before joining the Turing, He completed his PhD at the University of Oxford and a PostDoc at the University of Leeds, was Associate Professor at Durham University, and Visiting Lecturer at UCL. He has also worked as a Data Analytics consultant, as a science correspondent for The Times, and has acted in an advisory capacity to multiple space agencies.
